Looking for some travel inspiration for next year? Airbnb has just published its Top 20 trending destinations for 2020.  According to the property listing platform, it is lesser known and eco-conscious locations that are likely to show the biggest increase in interest. Their research also points to the fact that big upcoming events are catapulting some of these cities and countries in to the top spots.

The findings for 2020 are based on the change in the number of bookings made for 2020 as of September 2019 vs. bookings made for 2019 as of September 2018.

1 – Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

This city on the shores of Lake Michigan might have flown under the radar previously, but the upcoming Democratic National Convention in 2020 seems to have given bookings a boost, with Airbnb seeing an increase of 729% from last year. Airbnb’s release also points out the “terrific bar and restaurant scene and fascinating cultural attractions ” as well as “over 105 miles of scenic bike lanes” as big drawing points for the city.

 

2 – Bilbao, Spain

Second place on the trending list takes us to Spain. The former industrial city of Bilbao in the north of the country has transformed itself in recent years into a cultural hotspot. One of the main draws is the Guggenheim Museum designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Visitors can also expect “a lively dining scene, breathtaking architecture and an unforgettable cityscape”, writes Airbnb. And finally, another big event is likely drawing visitors to the Basque city: it will be one of the hosts of the Euro 2020 football tournament.

 

3 – Buriram, Thailand

383% YoY increase

Buriram is a rural province in eastern Thailand. It is “home to some of Thailand’s most treasured Khmer relics” with the Phanom Rung complex “comparable in grandeur to its much more famous Cambodian neighbor, Angkor Wat”, says Airbnb. The area is also known as a sporting hotspot, hosting MotoGP racing events (with the next MotoGP scheduled in March 2020) as well as the annual Buriram Marathon.

 

4 – Sunbury, Victoria, Australia

Next on the list we’re headed Down Under, with Sunbury taking fourth spot on Airbnb’s 2020 trending list. The Melbourne suburb saw a 356% increase in bookings. Airbnb writes that the areas “biggest claim to fame is as the birthplace of cricket’s most sought-after trophy — The Ashes” and it is set to be a hotspot for cricket fans in 2020, as it hosts the ICC T20 World Cup. Sunbury’s “wildlife, wineries and Victorian-era architecture” surely can’t hurt its appeal to visitors either.

 

5 – Romania

298% YoY increase

Rounding out the Top 5 is Romania, where the number of bookings has risen by nearly 300% year on year. Airbnb points to the Eastern European country’s “pristine hills and ancient rural villages” and “some of the best preserved virgin forests in Europe” as big attractions for visitors. Romania also boasts some eco credentials, ranking 15th globally when it comes to ecosystem vitality according to the 2018 Environmental Performance Index.
